First Due Fire Goes 2nd Alarm

By Firefighter Trevin Caruccio
September 23, 2008

Shortly after 1900 hours, a few concerned citizens came to the firehouse advising that there was a house on fire on Main Street in New Freedom Borough. They also said you can see flames and people were still in the residence. Engine 58-1 quickly responded with a crew already at the station, and advised communications in York of a working fire with possible entrapment. Crews quickly advanced a 2 inch hand-line and started an aggressive fire attack on the 3/4 involved 3rd story of the structure. With the primary search negative and conformation on all residence evacuated, crews continued with suppression. Chief 58 arrived on location and established command, and quickly called for the second alarm assignment.

As the attack crew controlled the fire and opened up walls, crews found that fire had traveled to the connecting residence. With a second line advanced by another crew from 58, the fire on that side of the house was extinguished. Within 10 minutes, crews had the bulk of the fire knocked and began overhaul. Crews from the second alarm assignment relieved attack crews for a much needed rest and continued to overhaul and extinguish hot spots. Working with a bloom construction house, overhaul was lengthy to assure that all fire was out. Crews were also stopped for a brief period of time for the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall and SRPD Detective to be able to conduct an investigation.

After the Fire Marshall was finished, crews continued to overhaul and extinguish hot spots. The entire residence was checked for any charring or smoke conditions and came back clear. 58 crews began to load the 4 inch supply line and attack lines. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 1145 hrs, and began to clean equipment back at the station. Thanks to all of the mutual aid companies who assisted. We have more pictures to follow and will be updated asap.
