Shortly after 16:00hrs, Station 58 was dispatched to assist Station 61 (Shrewsbury Volunteers) with a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) at the Shrewsbury Commons Plaza in the area of the Walmart Supercenter. Multiple patients were reported, and an EMS task force was en route.

Tower 58 (A/C Campbell) and Engine 58-1 (FF Womack) responded and were ordered to Side Alpha, the street side of the building. Engine 58-1 staged at the hydrant in case a water supply needed to be established. Crews from both apparatus were ordered to report to the rear storage and receiving area to assist crews from Station 61 in locating the suspected HazMat source. Once the source was located (damaged delivery of cleaning supplies), Engine 58-1 was placed in-service and returned to quarters. The crew from Tower 58 remained on-scene to assist with ventilation. Beyond mild chemical irritation, no major injuries were reported.

Chief 61 (Myers) had the Incident Command, EMS Supervisor 58 (Russell) was designated Medical Group Supervisor. Duty Officer from the York County HazMat Team (Company 91) was on scene as well.
